Counting

Come along, my plus one,

My addition, my extra,

My luscious addendum,

I will eat your heart,

Liver, as my Aztec kin,

Take the victim part

Or hold me down with the chain

Of your skin, make me answer,

Make me begin, cup your brain

To the measure of my anger,

My desire, while I zip you up,

Play your tune by finger

Memory, a rhythm

Limited in us, in us limitless,

Some rock, some suite, some hymn.

Your Life

All that remained was to rake away the maple,

Oak, and chestnut leaves. We threshed

The garden, weeded the beds.

The potatoes were dug, and pulled the last squash.

And then a five-inch nicotiana bolts up,

Blossoms in full blast, four days from

The frost that will singe the leaves and bleach

The stem so the flower rots to ash.

I had been reading an article about when

Our ideas drought and imaginations

Crash, when we wrestle for appearances

And languish in carpet shoes.

But that flower, shooting the sky, saying, Yeah,

A winter’s coming, yeah, but I’m onto something.
